Sacramento, California- June 2, 2025-After more than fifteen years of dedicated service on the Board, we honor and celebrate the extraordinary legacy of Dr. Mary Tarango, who is stepping down as Board Chair following a period of tremendous growth at SNAHC.
A lifelong advocate for Native communities, Dr. Tarango began her journey in the early 1990s as a leading voice in the fight to restore Wilton Rancheria’s federal recognition—an effort that spanned 22 years and culminated in restoration in 2009. Following that historic victory, she became Wilton Rancheria’s first elected Chairperson and has continued to serve in key leadership roles, including on the Tribe’s Grievance and Ethics Committees, and as part of the planning team for the Native American Breast Cancer Awareness Walk/Run.
In addition to her work with the Tribe, Dr. Tarango built a distinguished 32-year career in state civil service and worked extensively throughout Indian Country as a counselor, trainer, and advocate. Her focus on employment equity, youth support, and tribal justice reflects a deep and ongoing commitment to community empowerment.
In every role she has held, Dr. Tarango has been a powerful voice for equity, healing, and cultural grounding—often offering blessings and prayers at gatherings across the region. In recognition of her outstanding service, she was most recently honored with the President’s Medal for Distinguished Service from Sacramento State.
Dr. Tarango’s legacy is one of profound leadership, cultural strength, and dedication. We are deeply grateful for her vision, her voice, and her enduring contributions to SNAHC and beyond.
“Dr. Tarango has been the heart and spirit of our Board. Her wisdom, humility, and unwavering commitment to health care regardless of location and the trust responsibility to Native people have shaped SNAHC in ways that will resonate for generations. We are forever grateful for her leadership, guidance and love.” said SNAHC CEO, Britta Guerrero.
Please join us in thanking Dr. Tarango for their decades of service and leadership.
